A passion to learn the martial arts can be driven by numerous motivations. Identifying your motives will improve the likelihood that you'll find the learning experience rewarding. Unfortunately, a lot of people enroll into MA classes without giving thought to the goals they hope to achieve. For most people, that is a recipe for disappointment. If you're uncertain regarding what you would like to accomplish, you won't be able to gauge your success.

Below, we'll take a close look at 5 of the most common motivations that inspire people to enroll into martial arts classes. Some students remain on the same path throughout their lives. Others change directions due to new interests. In both cases, carefully identifying your interests, and noting when they change, is one of the keys to enjoying your training.

1 - Participate In Sport Martial Arts (Tournaments)

Martial arts tournaments, including those hosted for mixed martial arts, draw millions of fans from around the world. Participants have an opportunity to display their technique in a way that pits their skills against others. This is done in a controlled, safe environment where opponents agree to stick to the same set of rules, and earn points in the same manner.

Young people, in particular, are drawn to MA tournaments partly because they can direct their energy through their art, and compete for rank by besting others. Doing well in these events requires substantial practice, devotion, and focus.

2 - Learn Self-Defense

This is one of the most common reasons people enroll into martial arts training. In fact, it is a common motivation for parents who want their children to learn how to defend themselves. But it's worth highlighting a couple important points about self-defense training.

First, there are instructors who can teach students to ably defend themselves against attackers using the martial arts. The problem is, many of those who teach these classes do not properly prepare their students for physical confrontations. Worse, students are inclined to believe they have the requisite skills to fight, when, in reality, they do not. They are confident, but are likely to expose themselves to injury.

Second, many MA instructors teaching self-defense neglect to focus on two of the most important skills: defusing conflict and walking away. One of the advantages of MA training is that it is year-round rather than seasonal like most sports (e.g. baseball, basketball, etc.). This is especially valuable for kids who might otherwise stay indoors when their preferred sports are out of season.

They often practice meditative styles, such as Baguazhang or Tai Chi. Neither involve strikes, throws, or takedowns. Instead, they focus on calming the mind and body, and improving the flow between them.

    Do you discuss your martial arts interest or training with people who are not involved? Sometimes acquaintances, co-workers and relatives get wind of what you do in the evenings and the inevitable questions are asked. You'll have to field queries on what Dan you are, how many bricks you can smash, what would you do in a real fight, how you'd get beaten up if attacked by a platoon of commandos.... Martial arts, whether you like  it or not, are part of the pastimes classed as "weird". Grown adults wearing pyjamas, rolling around on the floor or uttering strange mantras. Yeah, that would count as weird. Then you have public perception based upon movies, cartoons, urban myths and the stories invented by martial artists to make themselves look better. Some people will be genuinely interested, but in my experience most people just want to sneer and laugh at you when they talk about martial arts. Keep Calm and Carry On!
