The beginning of each school year causes many working professionals - especially those shuttling their children to classes in the morning - to consider returning for a degree. Some left school early in order to focus on their careers. Others earned a bachelor's degree long ago, and want to return for an advanced degree. Still others simply want to take courses in a subject they have always had an interest in. For many of these would-be students, online education provides an ideal path.

Years ago, returning to school meant attending classes - usually at night - held in a physical building. Those who were pursuing their degrees while maintaining their careers had few options. Today, courses can be completed from home online. There is seldom a requirement to meet in person. With this flexibility in mind, here are five compelling reasons to consider going back to school.

#1 - Your Employer Will Pay For Your Education

A lot of companies offer to pay tuition expenses for their employees returning to school. The rationale is that further education benefits the companies since workers will have new knowledge and skills to leverage in their jobs.

Realize there are usually restrictions. For example, your employer may agree to pay the entire cost of a degree in your field, but only a portion of tuition expenses for everything else. Or, your company may require you to attend an accredited school. Your performance in your coursework may also influence the amount your employer will cover.

#2 - Invest In Your Future Potential

With jobs becoming more competitive, degrees and certifications provide a valuable edge. Today, there are more people vying for positions than space to accommodate them. This is likely to be the case over the long run.

By earning an online business degree in your field, you suddenly stand apart from the crowd. Your degree implies a higher level of skill and aptitude. Employers who need to fill specialized positions are more inclined to choose those with a higher level of knowledge.

#3 - Earn A Promotion Or Raise

An online degree can also help you advance in your current job. For example, you may be a perfect match for a specific position in your company. The only factor preventing you from being promoted to the spot is your lack of a formal degree in your field. Many professionals return to school for this reason.

Earning a degree or special certification can also result in a raise. Most employers value employees who are knowledgeable about their fields. Expand your knowledge base by taking online courses. You might be rewarded with a healthy boost in income.

#4 - Take Advantage Of Slow Job Market

Many professionals have either lost their jobs or are currently in positions that are poorly-suited to their skills and experience. Some have looked for a job for months without luck. If this describes your situation, now may be a good time to enroll in an online education program. When the job market heats up, you'll be better prepared to compete with a new set of marketable skills.

#5 - Prepare For A Career Change

You may have spent your entire adult life following the same career path, and suddenly desire to do something else. This happens to millions of people each year. Many people turn their backs on their old careers, and devote themselves to new ones. This often happens when the person wishes to pursue a long-held passion, or take advantage of greater opportunity in the different field. Earning an online degree in the new area can provide a valuable jumpstart into a new profession.

Going back to school can seem intimidating, especially for those who haven't seen the inside of a classroom in decades. Online education offers an easy alternative. It's an ideal way to earn your degree on your time and at your own pace.

What we're reading Dr. Patrick Burns has served as the Dean of Libraries since 2010 and Interim Dean since 2008, but that's not the only hat he's currently wearing. He's also the Vice President for Information Technology and continues teaching graduate-level engineering classes. Even with his extraordinarily busy schedule, Dr. Burns takes time to read materials other than technical journals and papers. He recently read The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr and Tony Horwitz’s newest book, Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid that Sparked the Civil War. Both are highly recommended by Dr. Burns. Information for online degree students can be found at http://lib.colostate.edu/services/distance. ~ Colorado State University Libraries - 4 days ago
