Those who have never taken an online class may be surprised by the experience. Many students find that completing coursework on the internet offers benefits and drawbacks that are less than obvious. Usually, it is a matter of setting the wrong expectations. A lot of people enroll into classes without a clear understanding about the role of the instructor, how to interact with other students, and the importance of time management.

We'll take a closer look at each of these issues below. Because your academic success relies, in large part, on navigating an unfamiliar process, it's helpful to understand what lies ahead.

Tools Necessary For Academic Success

Each school maintains their own requirements with regard to the equipment and software they require students to own. Besides a computer and an online connection, you will likely need access to Microsoft Word and Excel. Depending on the types of courses you intend to take, PowerPoint may also be required.

Nearly all of the other basic software you'll need, such as Adobe Acrobat and various plugins, will already be installed on your computer, or available online. Coursework for some degrees may require specialized applications. For example, engineers may need AutoCAD while illustrators might need Adobe Illustrator.

Hardware requirements are usually left to the discretion of the instructor. He or she may suggest that you purchase a webcam so you can participate in video conferences, and a headset for voice conferences. You may also need an upgraded sound or video card for your computer if your instructors intend to deliver lectures through audio and video streaming.

In most online courses, students will need to communicate with each other and the instructors via message boards and chat rooms. Your browser should already be able to access these platforms.

What Instructors Expect From Students

Many people underestimate the amount of time involved with taking distance learning courses. It's common to think that being able to complete coursework on a schedule of your own choosing means having to spend very little time doing so. In reality, an online class might require more time than a traditional class. There are two reasons.

First, when you take an online course, you will communicate mostly through typing. This takes far longer than doing so by talking. While it may seem like a small difference, it can add hours of work each week. The second reason is due to the high volume of reading you'll be expected to complete. There are rarely lectures. Most of the curriculum is taught via reading assignments.

You will also be expected to take periodic tests, and in most cases, complete a group project. This latter requirement can pose a challenge if those in your group live in different time zones.

What Students Can Expect From Instructors

You'll have direct access to your classes' instructors, as opposed to having to communicate with assistants. Even though you'll be expected to work independently, you will still be able to ask questions whenever the need arises. The difference is that you'll need to wait for your instructors' responses since they will not be physically present.

Many online colleges also maintain a support network through which you can receive additional academic help. These networks vary by school, and are usually more available for popular degrees (like online accounting degrees) than specialized courses.

How To Perform Well Academically

The most important skill for doing well in distance learning programs is the ability to manage your time. You must be able to prioritize the activities in your life to accommodate your classes. Otherwise, it is easy to fall behind, past the point of being able to catch up. You may need to juggle responsibilities related to your family, job, and extracurricular activities. This means that having the flexibility to complete your coursework on your own schedule requires a high level of diligence.

It is important to form realistic expectations if you are thinking about enrolling into online classes. Knowing what to expect is the first step to getting everything you hope from the experience.
